Released in 1979 as the aperture priority sibling of the famous AE-1, it keeps things beautifully simple. You set the aperture on the lens, and the camera reads the light through the lens and selects the correct shutter speed automatically, running steplessly from 2 seconds down to 1\/1000s. This makes it a particularly good camera for learning, because the one setting you control directly is aperture, which is also the setting that governs depth of field. Stopping down for a sharp landscape or opening up to f1.8 for a blurred background portrait becomes a very intuitive process. There's a backlight compensation button for tricky lighting, a self-timer, and a clear shutter speed readout in the viewfinder. The Canon FD mount gives access to a wide range of excellent and affordable lenses, and the 50mm f1.8 included here is one of the finest standard lenses Canon made for the system.
