We like the AV-1 for being one of the most approachable ways into SLR film photography. Released in 1979 as the aperture priority sibling of the famous AE-1, it keeps things beautifully simple. You set the aperture on the lens, and the camera reads the light through the lens and selects the correct shutter speed automatically, running steplessly from 2 seconds down to 1/1000s. This makes it a particularly good camera for learning, because the one setting you control directly is aperture, which is also the setting that governs depth of field. Stopping down for a sharp landscape or opening up to f1.8 for a blurred background portrait becomes a very intuitive process. There's a backlight compensation button for tricky lighting, a self-timer, and a clear shutter speed readout in the viewfinder. The Canon FD mount gives access to a wide range of excellent and affordable lenses, and the 50mm f1.8 included here is one of the finest standard lenses Canon made for the system. Light, reliable, and very easy to enjoy from the very first roll.
