We like the AV-1 for being one of the most approachable ways into SLR film photography. You set the aperture on the lens, the camera selects the correct shutter speed automatically, and a clear readout in the viewfinder shows you what it chose. This makes learning about depth of field very intuitive, opening up to f1.8 for a blurred background or stopping down for a sharp landscape without having to think about exposure. There's also a backlight compensation button for tricky lighting situations and a self-timer for group shots. The Canon FD mount gives access to a wide range of excellent and affordable lenses, and the 50mm f1.8 is one of the finest standard lenses Canon made for the system. Released in 1979, it sits in the same A-series family as the AE-1 but takes a different approach, putting depth of field control at the centre of the shooting experience. Light, reliable, and very easy to enjoy from the very first roll.
