We like the Hi-Matic F for being a compact, elegant, and very enjoyable camera from 1972 that sits in a sweet spot between a point and shoot and a proper rangefinder. Released as a lighter and more affordable companion to the Hi-Matic E, it carries a sharp 38mm f2.7 Rokkor lens in a solid aluminium body that feels well made and comfortable in the hand. The coupled rangefinder patch in the viewfinder makes focusing accurate and satisfying, exposure is fully automatic via the CdS meter with a stepless shutter running from 4 seconds to 1/724s, and a red warning light signals if the light is too bright or too dark for a correct exposure. Film winds manually with a smooth single-stroke lever, and both a hot shoe and PC sync socket are available for flash. A charming, capable, and very pocketable everyday rangefinder.
