We like the XB401 for being about as simple and cheerful as a film camera gets. The last of the fixed-focus Trip models, released in 2000, it carries the Trip name's spirit of no-nonsense, take-it-anywhere photography into a modern plastic body that weighs just 148g. The 27mm lens gives a genuinely wide field of view that is great for group shots, street scenes, and travel, and the fixed focus system means there is nothing to adjust at all. A sliding cover protects the lens when the camera is off, and the Extra Big viewfinder, the XB in the name, makes framing comfortable and easy. The built-in flash fires automatically in all conditions and keeps indoor and low-light shots properly exposed, and there's a self-timer for group shots. Film loads, advances, and rewinds by motor.
