The Samurai X3.0 is one of the most distinctive cameras ever made, and we like it precisely for that reason. Introduced in 1987, it won the Japanese Camera Grand Prix in 1988 for its design, which abandoned every conventional idea of what a still camera should look like and instead drew from the compact camcorders that were becoming popular at the time. The result is a true SLR in a vertical, single-handed grip body with a motorised 3x zoom, a through-the-lens viewfinder, and a 25-75mm lens of 14 elements in 13 groups that produces genuinely sharp, well-defined images. Because it shoots half-frame, each standard 36-exposure roll gives you 72 shots, and unlike most half-frame cameras the frames are landscape-oriented by default, making each shot feel natural to compose. The 25-75mm range is equivalent to approximately 35-105mm in full-frame terms, covering wide scenes through to a comfortable telephoto. Continuous shooting and a self-timer are also included.
